Air Pollution

  • What is air pollution?

  • Air pollution is the presence of substances in the atmosphere that are harmful to the health of humans and other living beings, or cause damage to the climate or to materials.
  • What are the causes of air pollution?

  • Air pollution is caused by many reasons. Some of the main reasons are dust and wildfires, animal digestation, vegetation, volcano activity, fossil-fuel emissions, agriculture, animal husbandry, waste, and CO₂ emissions.
  • How can air pollution be detected?

  • Air quality is measured with the Air Quality Index, or AQI. The AQI works like a thermometer that runs from 0 to 500 degrees. However, instead of showing changes in the temperature, the AQI is a way of showing changes in the amount of pollution in the air.
  • What are the effects of air pollution?

  • Long-term health effects from air pollution include heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases such as emphysema. Air pollution can also cause long-term damage to people's nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, and other organs. Some scientists suspect air pollutants cause birth defects.
  • What are some ways to put an end to air pollution?

  • Some solutions to reducing air pollution are walking, biking, or taking public transport to reduce the amount of cars on the roads. Turning lights or appliances off if when they are no longer in use helps reduce the pollution that will get emitted. Buying fewer things that are manufactured using fossil fuels will help the lessen the amount of Carbon Dioxide that gets discharged.
